Montreal 2026 Road Worlds to Welcome 1,000 Athletes From 80 Countries

Organisers of the Montreal 2026 UCI Road World Championships confirm that more than 1,000 male and female athletes from nearly 80 countries will compete across eight days of racing. The event features 13 separate championship events spanning junior, under-23, and elite categories, making it the largest annual gathering in road cycling.

The UCI allocates start quotas by nation based on world rankings and continental championship results. Top nations such as Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Slovenia receive up to eight starters in elite men's and women's road races, while smaller cycling nations may send one or two riders per event.

Global reach and local impact

Television broadcasts will reach an estimated 200 million viewers in 140 countries, with around 500,000 spectators expected along the course routes in Montreal. The organising committee has registered more than 1,500 volunteers and anticipates 800 accredited media representatives.

Montreal 2026 officials describe the championships as the biggest sporting event in the city since the 1976 Olympics. Free spectator access along road courses is designed to maximise public engagement, with the elite road races on the final weekend expected to draw the largest crowds on Mount Royal and through downtown streets.

National teams and rainbow jerseys

Unlike the professional WorldTour calendar where riders compete for trade teams, the Road Worlds require athletes to race in national colours. This format produces distinct tactical dynamics — short-term alliances within national squads and the emotional weight of the rainbow jersey at stake.

The 2026 edition will decide world champions in the time trial and road race for every age category, with the elite men's and women's road races on the final Sunday traditionally serving as the championship centrepiece.
