BJP Alleges Bhagwant Mann and Wife Ran 'Syndicate' to Settle Rape Cases; AAP Denies

Allegations at a Delhi press conference

The allegations came days after the National Human Rights Commission took cognisance of a complaint that Gurpreet Kaur sought ₹5 crore to suppress a rape case. On August 21, 2026, the NHRC directed the Punjab chief secretary and director general of police to inquire into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.

Commission member Priyank Kanoongo noted that the complainant was a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The NHRC also apprised the Ministry of Home Affairs of the matter, stating that further investigation would depend on the report from Punjab authorities.

AAP rejection and political context

The Aam Aadmi Party rejected the BJP's charges. AAP Punjab Women's Wing president and MLA Amandeep Kaur Arora described the allegations as baseless, according to reports. There was no immediate detailed response from Mann or Kejriwal to the specific syndicate claims at the time of the press conference.

The BJP's allegations land at a politically sensitive moment for the Mann government, which is simultaneously facing a major employee union agitation and the SKM farmers' protest at the Chandigarh-Mohali border. The NHRC-directed inquiry remains the formal institutional route for examining the underlying complaint against Gurpreet Kaur.
